Turkey
Few hunting experiences compare to the excitement-filled moment when, in the chill spring morning, a gobbling tom boldly approaches the hunter’s position. The Merriam’s subspecies, native to Vermejo, is arguably the most striking of the four North American subspecies. The ranch offers abundant opportunities to challenge the keen eyesight and wariness of the woodswise tom.The popularity of Vermejo’s spring turkey hunts has increased to the point that hunters travel from all across the country in an effort to try and lure a tom into range. There are three hunt periods, from mid-April to early May. The abundance of birds provides a two bird limit with success ratios typically at 85% on the first bird and 60% on the second. Plentiful birds, low hunter pressure, comfortable full service accommodations and spectacular scenery – all of these unique offerings help make Vermejo the only place to answer the challenge of the Merriam’s wild turkey.
Mule Deer
Trophy mule deer are one of the most difficult and sought after animals in North America. No more than 25 hunters participate in the mule deer hunt held on Vermejo, which keeps success rates and quality high. Typically, hunters can expect better than 80% success on 4x4 bucks. The average buck scores about 160 B & C. Mule Deer are very different in their habits than elk, and finding a true trophy requires a lot of time, hard work, and also luck. The deer hunts are conducted from the headquarters lodge, with comfortable accommodations, superior service and the friendly atmosphere of the lounge and dining room adding extra enjoyment to the Vermejo experience. Add to these the possibility of trophy bucks and excellent success rates year after year and Vermejo offers a complete mule deer hunting experience.
