PronghornA brief glimpse of tan and white – and then hundreds of yards distant stands the fleetest of all North American animals, the pronghorn. Northern New Mexico is known for its trophy quality pronghorn, and Vermejo offers its most successful hunt to individuals willing to test their skills on this high plains speedster. Pronghorn hunting on the high prairie at the southern end of Vermejo is superb. The success rate has been 100% every year that the hunt has been in existence. No more than 20 hunters annually are hosted on this three day hunt. Only trophy caliber bucks are sought, with horns averaging nearly 15 inches long, and the average score is in the high 70’s. Each year one or two bucks make the record book. The late summer hunt takes place on 60,000 acres of the ranch adjacent to Cimarron, where hunting parties are lodged in local establishments. In addition to the hunt, many of the guests take advantage of the remainder of the ranch to fish, view deer, elk, bison and other wildlife. A trophy pronghorn adds distinction to any hunter’s game room, and with a good population of trophy bucks, a hunter’s only destination should be Vermejo. BisonFor the hunter who wants to augment his trophy room with an animal that is both beautiful and unusual, Vermejo offers a limited number of bison hunts.Bison have made a comeback from the edge of extinction because of the foresight of a select few landowners. The population of free ranging bison on the ranch is large enough for us to harvest a few trophy bulls every year. The bison hunt is what the hunter makes of it and it can be a challenging, interesting hunt for the true sportsman. Some of our elk and deer hunters take bison while on a hunt; others specifically book a January or February hunt for this unusual trophy. |
